Professional Bio

Libby holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies with a minor in Gender Studies and a Medieval Studies Certificate from Indiana University. Their research and teaching focus on the intersections of feminist theory, transgender studies, and medieval European history.

In their current book project, Engendering Feeling: Religious Affect, Transphobia, and Historicity, Libby uses medieval religious texts to explore the intersections of religion, embodiment, and affect through the lens of trans studies. Engendering Feeling argues that contemporary conceptions of sex and gender must be expanded to include trans identities, gender variance, and gender non-conforming persons. While it does not dismiss the immense usefulness of the category of gender as a social, political, and historical analytic, it does argue that the narrow confines of binary gender categories limit the body’s transformative potential.

Libby is currently a member of the Being Human Luce Foundation Emerging Scholars Program. You can find their work in Transgender Studies Quarterly, Women’s Studies Quarterly, and Literature Compass.
